Drill press

I bought this in 1988.  One of the best investments for a shop.  $249.00 ....back in that day !

I've had an issue right from the first time I needed to adjust the spindle-speed and it's been a source of frustration, ever since.  To this day, I can't make sense of the Chinese Speed chart.

I found an "English" Speed Chart on line.

Moving right along.  I recently had a need to drill a series of relatively precise holes in a Radial pattern for a project.. I started off with a single center-punch mark on the tables edge and attempted
(unsuccessfully) to get these increments marked accurately  enough to have the last one line up with the first.  Then had the brilliant idea to use a Tailors Tape to help with this endeavor.  Turns out that the table is exactly 36" in circumference !  The "inches" correspond to "degrees".  Problem solved !  Rather then cut off the Millimeter markings I decided to keep them because.......there could be a future use for them ?

The original chart gave the spindle speeds for 50Hz , the European standard and for 60 Hz the North American standard. Never seen that before, but it makes sense.

So, every inch is 10 degrees and every 1/8" is 1.25 degrees. Nice.

I needed something similar for the chuck on my lathe and went to  Blocklayer.com  and printed a timing tape for a flywheel . you specify the diameter and the layout you want and it developes a printable file you can print off.
