Time for an oil change. Had run a tank of Yamaha RingFree, which tends to pollute the oil. No big deal, time for a change anyhow. First made sure I had a filter. OEM NOS!

Drained oil, removed filter. But wait. Where's the spring that ensures a good oil filter seal to the crankcase? Am I not remembering this correctly?
Unfortunately, I am. So where the F did it go? I changed the oil last. Did I simply not notice it was MIA? How long has this condition existed? What impact on the engine, if any?

Has it been this way since engine rebuild?

Acck.

Ordered up replacements from Partzilla.com, in the mean time.. Think I'll drain my used oil catch tank to see if possibly, somehow... mia parts are in there?
My guess is no.

Sigh, it's hard to be perfect!

Correct positioning per micro fische..

Wondering if using use 40+ year old paper filters is good idea??

Topped of a pint of STP zinc..and happy to say 230 miles later the oil level was the same!
