Choke plunger Stem Seals

I am currently finishing the work on 2 sets of carbs.  The ones that came on my '79 project were boxed and set aside until now.  The '79 bike is finished and has a previously rebuilt set with some tricks and treats!
The two sets have the same issue as do most carbs.  The external rubber seal that fits over the retainer nut and seals the plunger-stems are hard.
These little "boots" are unavailable from KAWASKI.  Several years ago I found some aftermarket ones on eBay.  They were crap.  Too loose to stay secured over the retaining nut (lip) and the stem hole was too small in dia. which resulted in the 'boot" merely lifting off the nut when the choke plungers were lifted.  I tried enlarging the hole for the stem but the entire little boot continued to lift.
This is what I have done to solve this issue; and before someone asks.....I didn't have "Black" and the "Viton" appearance is due to a different light source !

The nut holds the shrink-tube down, while using the heat-gun.

Nice workaround. Kudos Brother !!

I know when I was looking for carb throttle shaft seals I ended up getting new ones from Yamaha for the BS34 Mikuni carbs found on the 1980 - 1984  XS650. Just for Shits and Giggles, I had a look for choke plunger dust seals and found these for $1.95 a piece. Now I don't know about the fitment, but they sure do look like the same seal. The BS34 Mikuni's are a single throttle bore version of the BSW32 Mikuni's found on the KZ13's, likely using the same choke plungers.....

Hi Folks,
Zed1015, one of the members over at KZR has been refurbishing choke plungers for quite some time. He just sent me an explanation of his process:

Hi, Bill.  Yes! I've repaired plenty of the Z13 plungers..As I'm sure you know, worn and leaking plunger seals cause various issues linked to over fueling and reduce mpg too.In extreme circumstances they can disable the bike once the engine has reached normal operating temps..I replace the worn and hardened rubber seats with Viton of the same shore rating which is also ethanol resistant unlike the originals. The plungers get cleaned and also straightened etc if necessary as part of the service.Unfortunately I don't do air correctors for the 1300 though so it's just the plungers.

zed1015's email is zed.1015@yahoo.co.uk
zed1015's name is Rob. He also sells what he calls air correction jets which smooth out the off idle flat spot that bikes with pods often experience except that he doesn't offer them for sixes.
I'm going to pull the plungers off of some back up carb racks I have and ship 'em to Rob.
I'll report back on the results.
