Carb Slide Orientation?

Got to wondering about the orientation on the slides.
The factory service manual indicates the slide keeper should be facing the engine.
I wonder why?
Seems to me the vacuum from the engine, cause the slide to load the front side of the slide bore?
Would it be better if the slide keeper was reversed so that any vacuum loading would be absorbed by the keeper where the slide attaches?
