Keihin FCR33 carbs
1 day 19 hours ago
Anybody have an idea of how to read spark plugs?
Ive fitted a set of Keihin FCR33 carbies and Im having trouble getting them to run right.
They came with mixtures set at 2.5 turrns and were supposedly "Bolt on and go" which experience should have told me that is never correct.
It looks to me like 1 and 6 are rich, 2 and 5 are lean and 3 and 4 are ok ????? which doesnt make sense to me when all carbs are set the same.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

First, welcome to the site. The Administrators need to see another post from you and approve, then the system will allow you full access, so bear with us.
FCR 33's. Interesting mod and not cheap. Looking forward to hearing your resolve on this topic.
Now to your question- From what i can see, 1 and 6 look black and sooty which would indicate very rich fuel mixture. Hold that thought.
2 and 5 are white and on a carbureted bike , running on the lean side ( my opinion) if it were a fuel injected bike with an emmission system running an O2 sensor, i would consider them running fine, but on a carbed bike, running lean to the white side doesnt allow for changes in the weather.
3 and 4 are black and oily suggesting that either piston rings or the more likely valve stem seals are bad and the bike is burning oil.
Now whats interesting here is that the spark plug 1-6 are paired in the ignition circuit, 2-5 are paired and 3-4 are paired so that being said, I would be looking at your ignition coils first to ensure that you don't have coil problems exasperating the problem. The ignition coils are tucked up in the frame under the gas tank and that's above the engine. Air cooling of the coils is effy at best.
I would start first with removing the 3 coils and checking for cracks and also doing the resistance check. I think your bigger problem here may be the coils just because the readings seem to relate more to the sparkplug as they are paired in the ignition circuit. The oily 3-4 is another problem to figure out beyond the carb/ ignition problem and a leakdown test would help identify the source of the oil.
