I believe the KZ ( USA and Canada ) models received the rounded tank from model year 1981 - that means the A3 . There were a few other changes to the styling in addition to the fuel tank : the striping on the side covers and tailpiece, chromed engine and air box covers; new design of horn cover; plus a change to air assisted rear suspension, and different ignition system. I recall Kawasaki described the styling changes as making for ‘a lighter and more integrated appearance.
That rounded tank was fitted to the standard KZ model for the rest of the bike’s production life - A4, A5.
However the Z models (Europe and rest of the world where the bike was sold ) always had - from start to end of production - the large version of the coffin shape tank.
Hope this helps, and if I’ve posted any inaccuracies, maybe somebody will correct me.
Could you post some pictures of your KZ1300 A3, please?

The B1 had the coffin shaped fuel tank, too. The big one.
