1980 Project bike

Ain't this a beauty ? Anyone know if this seat was some kind of factory option ? It's definitely a stock base, but that double bucket...ugh. I'm hoping to put a new foam and seat cover on this one, but idk.

Looks like the seat from the B2 touring model. So either you bought a B2 which has had a partial remodel back to an A2 or it's an A2 with a B2 seat. The frame brackets that hold the tail section on to the frame are in a slightly different place. I know this because I bought a B2 and started transforming it to an A2.

The parts diagrams show the b2 seat as 2 pieces. This one is one piece. I guess I'll order a stock type a2 cover and see what happens. I'm already pretty deep in my resurrection. In my original plan I was hoping to not get into the engine besides adjusting valves etc. Cam chain was real noisy, adjuster seemed to work correctly out of the engine but just wasnt taking all the slack out. Replaced it with an ape manual. Now that the chain was quiet I could here a random "clicking" from the top end. Pulled the head. After taking the shim buckets out, turned the head upside down and a small washer fell out onto the bench. Uh oh. Then I noticed those pistons look almost new. Not like they had the 11k miles the back shows ??? Somebody's been in here before. Uh oh again. Then I noticed the #3 piston...... BACKWARDS. Oh well. Needed some attention on the water pump anyway.

Looks like it was destiny that you ended up with the bike. Maybe the previous owner decided to do rings and valves and put the piston in backwards. Good catch by you. I'll suggest that the reversed piston is what's making the light tick. Wrist pin bores are offset by a few thousandths to minimize piston slap. Putting the piston in backwards would emphasize the slap instead of minimizing the slap. Add to that, usually the cutouts for the valve heads in the piston are not symmetrical and maybe the piston was contacting a valve?
Any case, the bike should be happy that you're on task. Carry on.

Yeah, I've been scratching my head on this one LOL. Zooming in on the pic of the pistons, I can see what appears to be a rub mark at the back of the exh valve cutout. The valves are grungy and look appropriate to the miles. I wish I could ask the person who "worked" on it WTF ?
