Mike,
The 1300 has a collection of Nylon Gears inside including.

Water Pump Drive.
Cam Chain Idler Gear.
Ignition Pick Ups
Oil Pump Drive Gear.
...........& probably one or two more I cannot think of now !

The Camchain Idler Gear is the one that wears out quickest & is situated inside the center of the cylinder head (which needs to be removed to reach it)& has the camchain running over it. It can be seen by removing the cam cover & using a torch.

The Water Pump Drive Gear is once again in the middle of the cylinder head & off-set just behind the Ignition Pick up unit. It can also be seen by removing the cam cover but is hidden a little more. This gear should last 60k miles plus if the oil levels are kept high & changed frequently. It only fails if the engine gets too hot & it becomes soft...........normally caused by low oil level.

The other gears cannot be seen so easily as inside the motor, but very rarely if ever need replacing as they are well covered in oil most of the time.

Look after your bike & its oil carefully & you should not have to worry!

Pete

Hi Mikez
You can do all this with the motor in the frame. Head and barrels will have to be removed. Here's hoping you do not drop anything into the motor, it will be happy fishing or drop the sump.
Cheers
Rob

Hi Guy's. I've been reading through this topic, and would like to add a couple of things. #1: When doing a top end rebuild, do not use the Vesrah head gasket. I've never gotten one of these to seal. They always leak water. Cometic makes a head and base gasket for the 1300 sixes, that seems to work very well, if the original is not available. #2: After doing the CCT upgrade, the nylon idler gear on the cam chain, seems to get eaten by the cam chain in about 50,000 miles. I'm guessing it's the higher spring pressure of the newer tensioner. I'm currently talking to a local machine shop, about machining some from steel, (will probably cost about $150.00 each). #3: If any valves are needed, Kim at Carolina Cycle, can set you up with stainless valves for about $30.00 each. If you ship the entire head, he can also custom make valve guides and seats. It's also a good idea to replace the valve springs, while your in there. Performance springs for the KZ900 and KZ1000 are a direct swap, you just have to buy 2 sets, and have a half set left over. With the stainless valves, and stiffer springs, anything over .004 inch valve clearance, she'll rattle. I'd never heard of using rings for a CB750 in our sixes, but the 1977 and 1978 CB750's are the same bore as ours. Definitely worth looking into, considering our rings are about $60.00 a cylinder, and you can get the Honda's rings aftermarket for about $25.00 a cylinder. Here's a couple of pics, of the last 1300 I put together,(ZN, not KZ). I hope you like em. :)

Hello, I like your engine stand, I was going to try to make one. What kind is yours? It looks like it will fit other motors also. Thanks! Bob

Very nicely done!

I've read about that new CCT doing the same thing on other forums. Other members had dealt with the issue by removing 10mm from the spring on the tensioner. If anyone can't find the info I can try looking for the guide on that and post a link or something :).
