Tim:
Are you sure you have an A-4 starter clutch, and that nothing from the A-1 migrated over the years to your newer engine?
This goes back to making sure you have everything per the parts diagram???
With the A-1 and A-2 starter clutch using the lower torque setting, I wonder if you have an older clutch assy?
Todd.

Guys,
Thanks for the comments / guidance.
Ian, I did wonder why the main RH alternator is torqued upto 51 ft/lb, but thought maybe down to increased mass when combined with the starter clutch - but I am clutching at straws now.
It all gets a bit fuzzy about know , but I just assumed a previoius owner had an unplanned meeting with the tarmac at some time which necessitated the retro fit of a new starter clutch assy (circa 1982): hence the later colour scheme and horn assembly (and nice new LH muffler). The replacement starter clutch assy I recently fitted to my bike I sourced from a UK classic bike importer, who was breaking a US 1979 KZ1300 A1 engine with 25K on the clock. To my joy, the starter clutch & sub-alternator combined unit was identical to that fitted to my 1979 bike: it fitted and worked OK: apart from my dreaded torque issue.
Here is the identical replaced unit I took off my bike: I just asumed this was the standard fit for 1979 US A1.
I'm confident the (rest of the) engine in my Z13 is the original unit: maufactured July 1st 1979, exported to Germany in 1997, then the owner moved to the UK in 2003. All docs, dates, mileage, engine and frame numbers are within the 1979 A1 range.
These old bikes can be a bit of a mystery.
Cheers Tim

I've had a good flick through the book aaand on page 343. There. Is another small table, this refers to the same bolt BUT it is a 12 mm P1.25 this is only torqued up to 94 ft-lb and refers to page 347.
Sorry, just to add a bit more confusion.
