Deep Oil Sump Differences?

I only had problems with a small sump through my own neglect in not checking the oil level. A very expensive failure of No. 6 big end - at least I think it failed due to oil starvation because of low oil level but I never saw the oil pressure light come on which I would expect if the sump pick-up stopped drawing oil from the sump.

I've never seen the oil pressure warning lamp come on under normal oil levels. For a few years I even had an oil pressure gauge on the bike so I could keep an eye on it but still never saw it drop even under aggressive riding.

That was back in the days before internet forums and I wasn't aware of the issues.

If I hadn't come across a deep sump at the right price, right time, etc. I would have been [strike]happy [/strike] content to stick with my shallow sump.

The information I have received in Scotland is, the problems with the shallow sump only arise if the bike is left running when it is on the side stand. Otherwise it is perfectly adequate, providing the oil levels are correct.
