Cam chain skipped engine quit was created by coleface
undefined There's a 1300 for sale that has had the cam chain fail after 100,000K. Bike quit at a stop sign and owner said he thought it ran out of gas. A shop took it apart and now sits.
My question is what would would happen when the cam chain fails? Bent valves? What would be the worst case scenario?

Bent valves for sure. Sometimes one but usually two. It's an interference engine, meaning that the intake and exhaust valves cross paths with each other. Depending on how many teeth the chain skipped, there could be piston damage as well. Although not likely in this case since it happened at a stop sign, it can bend a Conrod as well. That could happen when deaccelerating at highway speed

Thanks. Owner says a bent valve maybe more but it's been a few years since he brought it home from the shop in pieces., I'd say it's a parts bike. If it's still up in a few weeks I might contact him again and see if he wants to sell.

Apart from possible damage to the engine, you should know that every time you clean the garage and every change of address of a dismantled motorcycle, parts are lost along the way.
