Cylinder sleeve removal / replacement

Just because it's winter in Canada, doesn't mean that we don't go outside and use the BBQ.

Today we are cooking a cylinder block
Set BBQ temperature @ 300-350 Deg. F
Place cylinder on a piece of 2 x 4
Cook for 30-40 minutes
Turn cylinder block over onto a piece of plywood, top side down  and allow cylinder liner to hang over the end
Place a piece of 2 x 4 on top of the liner and hammer out with a 12 oz. hammer. 10-12 good solid smacks.
Once the liner is flush with the bottom of the cylinder block, grab the cylinder liner from the top and twist / turn it out of the block.
Repeat

Bob's your uncle , Mary's your aunt

 
Temp set at 300F

 
Set up in BBQ for heating

 

All done. 1 Hour later. 
allow to cool before bringing inside, 1/2 hour.

Oh, that's just the appetizers. The Main Course will be 66m cylinders liners a la  L.A. Sleeve I hope. We'll see what the cost looks like. 

Gert Roewer was building engines with KZ750 1st over pistons at 67mm and I got to tell you, I'm scratching my head at how he pulled that off. The cylinder block at the top is REALLY thin and no room for machining out so the O.D. of the liner at the top has to remain the same. over sizing the bottom where the liner enters the crankcase is very doable. I'm still taking measurements and making drawings of what might work for the 66mm bores. But it's Christmas and my head's not in the game quite yet.

KB. May have changed.. but here' what I found out back then.

As of 03-2023 ---
  • So I called LA Sleeve, who made a liner for Ray Slocomb after the upside-down ring was found that scored the cylinder wall.l.
  • Spoke with ‘Dave’. He remembered and actually found the work order from the sleeve Ray purchased. The breakdown is this:
  • $160 per sleeve
  • $225 labor per sleeve
  • Up to 3 months to make them
  • Doing the math, (225+160) * 6 equals a staggering $2,310

Any chance of close up pics of the liners? And o-rings? 

This pic was taken after 20 minutes of clean up with a green Scotch Brite pad and a piece of 400 wet and dry paper. The top o ring looked more like a square o ring and completely filled the o ring groove. The 2 bottom o rings were still subtle and remained in the cylinder block.


 
Still in good shape and could be reinstalled. If the cylinder sleeves come in at a rediculous price, that's what's going to happen. I'll clean everything p and put back together. It's all about the journey.
