Around here it's magnesium chloride which is intended to delay the formation of frost. It makes the roads a bit of a greasy mess but is better that rock salt.

And I feel guilty because my 1980 KZ lives under a cover in cold, but dry weather.
Is one to assume your winters are higher humidity?
Battery tender?

The winters in Scotland are often frosty in the mornings then wet in the afternoon, if the temperature rises above freezing. My garage isn't heated, so I always remove the tank, side panels and battery and store them inside before I wrap the bike up for the winter. I give the battery a trickle charge now and again, and this seems to keep it in good order. My main concern is condensation forming on the bike, so wrapping it up well is the best solution for me.
