this might be fuel flow problem. Previously I had one of the glass inline filters on my bike and I had exactly this problem. When I took the glass filter apart I found that the holes that allow the fuel to flow through to the output side actually got mostly covered up by the output side of the filter when it was assembled. I replaced it with an anodised aluminium type and get good flow now.
Otherwise, as it's two cylinders, either carb float level on one of the carbs or a coil failing

Hi George,I could use some more help from all the wizards on this forum. I put this in the Carburetors category but I honestly don't know what is going on.
Problem #1 seems to be solved by putting a new (Rick's) starter on my 1979 Kz1300 A1. With the Kz cold, hot and everything in between it seems to start fine.
Problem #2. When running down the road it seems to start backfiring and running on only 4 cylinders at some random interval of time. When this happens I pull over and bring it down to an idle, rev it up a couple of times, and then take off again, with no problems. Sometimes it happens again, some times it doesn't.
It 'feels' like carburation but I honestly don't have a clue.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
George

Thanks for the input Zed_thirteen.
I still haven't had any issues the last couple of times I took it out. I'll probably try your recommendation anyway, just to be sure.

Ok, I was wrong. I'm still having the problem of loosing power while driving at a steady speed for a number of miles. It clears up by the time I pull over and rev it up a couple of times.
I Ordered a new inline fuel filter (per Zedthirteen's recommendation),
I'm also interested in possibly getting new coils. I would like to get some that don't require any mounting changes if at all possible. Anyone have any recommendations?

For the "Gazillianth" time:

If fuel starvation is a concern, there is not a fuel-line configuration that's is as short, direct or less complicated.
Use thin-wall non-reinforced fuel-line.
Ignore the "arrowed" retainers. They were used merely to hold the fuel line in their correct position for the purpose of the pictures.
The White cable-tie is a suggestion to avoid any conflict between the fuel-line and the linkage.

Have you removed your fuel tap petcock from the tank and looked at the filter?
I have a Z1000 and if I run out of gasoline up to the reserve inlet I have to stop until I fill the carburetors again, once the pots are empty there is not enough gasoline flow to fill them while driving at more than half throttle.

Thanks KawaBCN. I switched to a Pingel fuel petcock a month or so ago. The old one looked 'ok' and I had it in there for a long time.
