That's perfect thanks Globemaster, wanted to understand the mix'n'match of components and the ZN comparision very relevant too, didn't know it was differently engineered.

1999 K1200LT - now sold, I like them however was nearly as big as my X5 but no faster.

globemaster, if you are inclined, could you please tell us a bit about your time in Japan/ What sort of engineering were you involved with? What were your impressions of the KZ1300 ? I guess the bike must have attracted a lot of attention in Japan in those days, as that model was not sold in the domestic market.

what are those pressed metal plates with slots in? I don't have those - at least I don't think I do - it's been a while since I had clutch cover off

Those are the baffle plates discussed earlier in the thread; some models / oil capacities had them to combat frothing oil.
