Sure is nice to have some time to work on motobikes..
Thinking that the overheating issue might be solved, I moved onto where to place the loud-assed horns and attempting to fix a slight oil leak coming from the RHS alternator. Yes, this KZ1300 two alternators.
The horns were originally placed behind the fairing, on the stay. While they ARE loud, that location only scared the shit out of me. I'm going to try here, and be creative with the wiring.

I kind of like the look. The horns weigh next to nothing, I'm not worried about the additional unsprung weight.

The other side doesn't look as good, but is good enough. Up close shot.

On to leak repair. It was leaking past the rubber grommet at bottom. I'm pretty sure that part is not available.

Given the amount of silicone on one of the bolts, it looks like the engine builder had trouble sealing it too.

Cleaned everything up and carefully reassembled. Time will tell. Did NOT start the bike to allow curing time. Should have done this with bike on side stand to keep oil off the sealing surfaces. Oh well.

Some delaminating occurring on the flywheel.. Not sure what to do about that.

I think your bike wins the award for the strangest place to mount horns on a Z1300 !
Be VERY careful how you tighten the bolts on the Gen Cover as the very lowest bolt hole is very often snapped off the cover if not tightened correctly.
Start at the very TOP bolt on the cover and work downwards to tighten the LOWEST on last of all......but not very tight, just "nip it up".
The reason for this is the lowest hole is very slightly raised than the others on the cover so if you tighten it FIRST, you can end up snapping it off as you tighten the others against it. you then need another cover.

That wire grommet on the right cover is I think just a poor design overall. Mine leaked at the same place, and even through I swapped in a new cover gasket it still weeps oil a bit. Not sure how I'm going to take care of it yet, but with the amount I still have to do on my bike, it's kind of low on the list.

I highly recommend using Permatex No.2 on the stator wire grommet. It was made for just this type of application. I used if for years replacing the lower intake manifold gaskets in GM v-6's when I was wrenching for a living. Its a non-hardening type of sealant that bonds much better than silicone. I also use it on the cam end plugs with great results.
Also consider that on the 1300's that the wires themselves can leak because the braiding goes through he rubber with the wire. That may not be an easy thing to fix either...

I did post somewhere here that the "german shop" now has replacement rubber blocks for the wires, cheers
after tuesday even the calendar goes WTF
