Found this engine for sale, near me. Well, kinda near me. 

Looks like a 79 A1, but the limited VIN resources I have says more like an 1980?

Hi Don, I also answered on FB but the pick-ups behind the block were used on the 79 A1 and the 80 A2 (and B2-Touring)
Cam-chain tensioner needs sorting

1980 KZ1300 B2 Touring/A2
1990 ZZ-R1100 C1

Thank you. The seller wants $250 which seems very reasonable. Then again, seller hasn't posted back since I asked if he had paper on the engine to prove it wasn't stolen? Maybe the seller is just busy?

Engine numbers have never been used to identify model years etc, only frame numbers. There appears to be more engines produced than whole motorcycles. One reason could be that Kawasaki sold engines to other manufacturers to use in three wheelers that proliferated during the early eighties.
I've never seen frame numbers in a finishing sequence , only starting frame numbers for each year. 
Although , this writer states the total numbers of KZ/ Z and VN made over the 10 year manufacturing cycle.
