Hello, all.
I bought a 1979 last summer, my first Kawasaki. I have owned a good number of motorcycles aside from that, including three Hondas and an uncounted number of Suzukis. I have a strong inclination toward 70s-80s muscle bikes. I am here primarily because of carburetor woes.
That said, I am an amateur mechanic, driver by profession and my other interests are cars, trucks, firearms and stereo equipment.
That pretty much covers it.

I do not expect that anyone will have a magic bullet fix for my problem, but here it is.
Two of my carburetors cleaned up nicely and seem to work fine. The third has a plugged pilot jet. The pilot jet needs to thread through a hole above it that normally is plugged off. This upper hole has a burr on it that we cannot see or fix which is not allowing the pilot jet to be removed from the carburetor body. Short of drilling out the upper hole to a larger size I am at a loss as to how to remove the jet.
All that said I have been knocking around the idea of aftermarket EFI conversion on my spare set of carburetor bodies, as at least then the problem would be fixed. This would also allow the intake to be changed to anything I wanted. My bike is already customized so it will never win a Concours for accuracy, anyway.

a few weeks ago, while rebuilding a new core set of carbs, I had to drill out three of my pilot jets. Using a small enough drill bit so that you do not touch the thread boss was fairly simple. the jets clung to the drill bit, once the bit punched through the jet and I reversed direction on the drill.

Be careful to not punch through the carb body. There is a reasonable amount of room above the jet.

Some carb models of 1300/6 had small metal PLUGS pushed into the top of the holes that the 6 mixture screws sit in.
This was to stop people altering the mixtures at a later date due to emission laws in that country. They are NOT plugged for the UK / Euro models.

You can see these little plugs on the parts diagrams sometimes.

They look permanent but are not as you can CAREFULLY drill them out to expose the mixture screw heads which then allows you to adjust them (if not seized in).
