I have an A5 and the igniter on that is a square steel box behind the right side panel with four wires
in the heap of boxes that my zed was in was an aluminium finned igniter with 6 wires. would this be the Holy Smoke one.

Any Z1300 Igniter Box is worth keeping as a spare.

The finned oblong ones with 6 wires are from the A1 & A2 & are not too rare as these 2 models were the best sellers all around the world.

The A3 has a black steel box type & is VERY rare.

The A4 & A5 share a steel box which is still quite rare.

I always say that even if it is broken keep it as one day it will be repairable or worth repairing. Or at the very least things like an ignition system the original box can be used to house an brand new shit whatever ignition that makes 10,000 squillion volts.
I have been involved in the vintage and veteran car and bike movement for as long as I can remember and the things that I have seen thrown out is unforgivable.

Off topic I guess, but had a good laugh the other day, sort of has to do with the "holy smoke" bit, was talking to a mate, he asked me "what do you think makes electronic stuff work?", I replies with the usual tech stuff and rubbish, in other words I was trying to baffle him with bulls*it, he replied "Blue smoke makes it all work", had me confused there for a while till he explained, if you ever have any electronics and you let the blue smoke out, it doesn't work anymore, so I guess he's right, pretty good stuff that blue smoke

For the first 12 months after I finished school I worked for RCA in the radio section and one of the tricks was to put a small plastic tube into whatever someone was working on and when they were head down inside it (a lot of 2 way radios those days were large with valves and all that old fashioned stuff) you would blow cigarette smoke into the tube and out they would come scrabbling desperately for the power supply to turn it off. Everybody had it done to them me included and you would just go into panic mode and when you had a look around all were watching and laughing.

The 1300 A1 & A2 CDI Units can be reapired by a company in the UK.

Cannot find their name at the minute but they have been doing it for a long time.

It has 3 modules inside (one for each pick up & coil) and they are the same as the 2 modules in early Honda 750's.

I took an old 1300 CDI Unit apart a few years ago & its pretty basic stuff inside all encased in hard rubber obviously poured in when being manufactured.

As you say, its all possible to repair !
