Hi and welcome.

Well done putting some research in before you buy one. Get a good idea of what to look for when checking out a perspective bike, condition is everything with a 35 year old motorcycle. There are some issues the 1300 had and they were addressed over the years. So there are different issues with a '79 compared to an '81 compared to an '82 for example.

You can download the shop manual from this forum, there is link on the right side of the home page near the bottom. Or you can pick up a manual from e-bay, either way you can get an feel for how they are put together and what service and basic repairs entail.

Also just a general suggestion, buy the bike you want. IF you want a naked 1300, then look for that. Trying to put together an incomplete machine or convert a touring model can take a lot of work and some expensive and hard to find parts. Quite a few people have done it, but if you can find a complete running bike you'll be ahead of the game.

Search Tempest is a great way of searching craigslist nation wide. There are quite a few 1300's out there at the moment.

Good luck

Welcome to KZ1300 Don!
I see that you've been given plenty of good advice already and you don't even own a 13 yet. Feel free to post up possible prospects as you find them.

Welcome Don, and good luck with your search for a Zed13; pretty sure you would not regret buying one. ;)
I am lucky enough to own a KZ900 (with 1015cc bore) and the KZ1300 really does deliver a different and probably unique riding experience: even riding my Zed13 against newer bikes, the sheer presence, grunt and sound are awesome. Only real drawback for me (apart from spares availability compared to a KZ1000) is the weight - but you do soon get used to it.

Nice to see some pics of your prospective bike - Cheers Tim

Hi Don. And welcome to the forum.

One of the true classic bikes to own, but as stated in other posts spares can be very hard to get hold of for the beast and will cost you.
Will not find a better site for the 1300 than this one with plenty of help and advice from members and only need to ask re any problems once you've purchased your stead. Go for standard as you can get and worth paying a little more Wonga than you would like to pay. It will save you a lot in the long term.
Happy hunting for the 1300.
