There is no 'tools' section so I guess this belongs here?...

Could anyone advise me about where could I get a precision granite surface plate in or around Vancouver? Or something similar, to take good measurements.
Not the Starrett expensive plates...... Maybe a part of an old machinery?

I went poking around just to see where one would go to buy a surface plate and found a few on Amazon of all places. Depending on size, this one at 12" x 18" might fit your bill? When not using it for a surface plate, it could double up as a side table for the couch? ;)
At $96 US I could live with that .

Go to a Counter-Top/Cabinet manufacturer. They'll have a bin of cuttings from Granite tops. The surface is ground and polished. They'll probably give you the piece.
I have used mine for cleaning and dressing cam-cover, side-cases, carb. tops and bowls. I just taped down some W/D abrasive, keep it wet with some water and go at it !

That slab on Amazon looks delicious! That's exactly what I've been looking for, and I am sure you guess why - checking the crankshaft to begin with.

Great idea scotch, I will pay them a visit. But probably it's not precise enough for use with a dial gauge. Definitely handy to have around especially if rescued from a dumpster.

By the way, I found these V blocks which are a great price if precise.

Now I need to plan ahead how I'm going to mount that block on the bike... It's 80 pounds! Need some good rope.
