As mentioned earlier by someone, the main difference between the 79 (A1) and 81 (A3) model was the ignition pick-ups.
The A1 + A2 had the pick-up unit behind the cylinders on the RH side of the motor, whilst the A3 had them inside the casings at the end of the crank. The A3 also had chrome plated engine casings.
This also made the CDI Units different too and not interchangeable.
The A3 will also have the deeper oil pan and longer oil pick-up pipe fitted and is the RAREST 1300 ever made as it only lasted for 1 year of production before the A4 arrived with a different ignition system again !

The A3 was also the first Z1300 (KZ1300) to be made outside of Japan, in Detroit USA.

So other than the above, everything else mechanically on the A3 is the same as the A1 + A2

Here is another one for sale in my neck of the woods. I've seen this one and I'd consider it way too much money for its condition as it is quite a rust bucket.

The deeper pan will bolt right up. You'll need the longer internal pickup as well, if you decide to convert.

On the flip side, you can also sell it for a pretty decent chunk of money. They are in high demand by pretty much everyone who owns a KZ1300.

(Personally, I don't have a problem with the shallow sump. I've heard you only get problems if you decide to drag race off of every stop sign and street light- the oil had a tendency to slosh back in the pan, starving the motor. For 99% of riding applications, however, the shallow pan should work just fine. Now, I wouldn't turn one down, if it was given to me. BUUUT I wouldn't spend any money on one either. ;) )
