Just finished installing custom pistons in my 1300 build. Man this job is not easy, it took three of us to get the cylinder block down over the pistons...

I've been following your progress with great interest. What is the red oil you have used for piston fitment - is it anything special?
I notice you have compressed the rings with what look like worm drive hose clips. Did that work ok?
Do we really have to wait months to get to know how the engine runs? Please work on it through the winter!!

The red stuff is Permatex brand engine assembly lube. Its the consistency of honey and sticks to everything.

I usually don't bother with assembly lube, I use lithium grease on plain bearings and engine oil everywhere else. This time since the engine will be sitting for a while I decided to use assembly lube.

Hose clamps do work, I have used them many times before on all kinds of engines. A couple of them had to be repositioned a few times during assembly. When putting the cylinder block down you can't move it slow enough. One slip and you can break a ring or even damage a piston. It's best to cut up a soda or beer can and wrap the aluminum around the piston and then put the clamp over it. I didn't think I had room for that with this engine so I just used the clamps.

I wish I could press on this winter but where I live its already been down to -15°F and in a month the high during the day could be below -20.
