Recently got the ZN1300 out of storage. When the motor is 'cold' and I pull in the clutch lever, I hear a noticeable metallic rattle emanating from the clutch cover area. Noise disappears when I release the clutch but returns each time I pull in the clutch until the motor gets warmer.

I don't recall hearing that rattle before. Anyone else experience this?

I would investigate that further before using the bike.
We all know most Jap bikes have an element of clutch rattle on idle due to the weight of the basket and plates, which is reduced when the clutch is pulled in, but if it has a Metallic Rattle when you pull the clutch IN.............then something is wrong.

Suspect something has come loose or a failed bearing ?

I'd start with draining the oil to check for anything. If clean, you can always pour it back in. Then, pulling the clutch cover is straight forward.

Or.......you could start by confirming the clutch actuator adjustment is correct, which you didn't mention !

Agree scotch - proper adjustment first. With experienced members whose name I recognize I've been recently assuming that the basics are already taken care of - unless specifically mentioned. So, I'd actually start with putting the bike on center stand! haha :silly:

It's not the common clutch rattle that many old Japanese bike exhibit - that rattle happens when the bike is idling in neutral and disspars when the clutch is pulled in (never had that issue on the 1300).

I'll have to take a look at the clutch adjustment - hasn't been that long since the last time I checked it though - I lube the clutch cable a few times a season at which point I check the adjustment - last time I checked was last fall but less than a couple hundred kilometres ago at this point.

PS: Stan - putting this half ton bike on the centre stand isn't for the feint of heart (but I can still occasional manage it at this point)
