Morning guys (well in the UK it is)
I was bleeding the air from the cooling system and noticed the cooling fan did not activate, I have checked the fan itself by grounding the fan switch lead and the fan started, so I assume it is the switch itself. Finding a replacement switch without paying through the nose it proving difficult ( it’s the same switch as the ZN1300) also these switches are becoming scarcer these days, so are there alternative switches from other Kawasaki’s or even other vehicles that can be used without drilling and tapping holes etc,
The 1980’s GPZ900 switch looks similar from pictures this has a rating of 97 degrees C so I believe it would work
I would prefer a lower activation temperature like the ZN1300 one
Hope you can help

Cheers

Gavin

I put in a zg1300 fan switch then had to install a manual fan switch to turn the fan off after turning my bike off to stop my battery from draining.

Good info for a replacement for the fan thermal switch !

<....had to install a manual fan switch to turn the fan off after turning my bike off to stop my battery from draining.>

rdbhere2 - Typically the Manual Fan Switch is connected in Parallel so the fan can be turned on sooner (Before the thermal switch activates)
The way you worded your explanation suggests you have your manual fan switch connected in Series in which case you can not turn the fan on Manually.
If the coolant temp is too high the fan will usually run after the bike is shut off, for up to 1 minute The fan is powered directly off the battery (Not through the ignition-switch) for this reason.
If a Thermal switch with a significantly lower temp is used, the fan will automatically run (off the thermal switch) longer. It shouldn't run for so long however, as to drain the battery ! If this is the case then perhaps your battery is getting tired.

I wanted my fam to kick on automatically at a lower temperature with the option to turn the fan off when I stopped riding.

Yes, I understand that but I guess my point was if the fan is running when you stop the engine it's because the thermal-switch is indicating the coolant temp. is still to hot. So I'm assuming you either let the bike idle with the fan on and wait until the fan stops - then turn the engine off or you just turn the fan off manually and let the engine remain hot - to cool down eventually on it's own.

This is easy and a very safe and convenient way to control the fan.
To have both options as you indicate, then you'd have to include a second On/Off switch to kill the power from the fan relay. Off the top of my head: A single-pole double-throw? (or a double-pole/double throw switch -depending on how you choose to wire it) UP - Fan on manual. Middle - Fan on from thermo-switch. Down - No fan at all. Could be a nasty bundle of wires to deal with.

The fan turns on sooner than it did with the stock temp switch and the temp gauge needle usually shows around the p in "temp" when I turn the fan off.
