I5000 km later and that's what my idler gear looked like! My advice...if your going to change your cam chain tensioner, go the manual tensioner route. I went with the ZZR1000 tensioner and cut the recommended 12mm off the spring and it has still chewed up the gear at a high rate.

That is problematic alright- wont do another 15,000 that's for sure.
I have done 20,000 kms on my rebuild , but used the Liska gear along with the ZZR 1100 tensioner.
Had the valve cover off last month for a check over and there is no wear on the gear. It is more noisy than with the plastic gear. Seems there will always be some compromise somewhere.

I have used the original tensioner with one modification. I have changed the 6 mm. original limiter bolt to one which is ca. 10 mm longer and have a locknut in it. I set the tensioner when engine is hot and then use the longer bolt to lock the shaft, tighten the locknut. Then check once every 3000 miles/5000 km. Has worked fine for me the past 30.000 km.
