Although this doesn't get into specifics about disassembling the starter button, it does talk about the starter problem and what FineLine did to fix it and it can be done without removing the switch from the handlebar. Scotch is adamant about physically cleaning the contacts

Don't overlook the possibility that the high current contacts in the starter relay are burned/pitted.
I've had to address this issue 3X in 44 yrs on my '80.  The last time I made a new "heavier" contact-bar and added an "arc Supressor".  (Google it !)

It's worth noting I haven't had  any issues with the relay since,  but can't say it's because of the heavier contact bar, the supressor or both.   I'm not interested in taking the relay apart at this time, to inspect the contacts.  "If it's working -  there's no need to Fix it "

Thanks for the reference, Kawboy. I’m getting pretty solid on the mechanical side of things. The learning curve on electrical is a little steeper… except  when it’s applies to whiskey/brewing systems  . Maybe I need more “brain juice” when I’m working on the bike.

Scotch, thanks for the advise. I’ll be sure to check for anything fishy with the contacts. And do my research on the arc suppressor. Then I’ll be “doing it”. Great photovation.
