A few years back while researching old posts, I don't remember who the author was but came across one that promised that the clutch cable will break on the road.  Because of that post, I ordered a spare and kept it in the trunk.

Yesterday, I was three hundred miles or so from home when just that happened.  While I wasn't able to get to the fuel tank bolt to take the old one off as it was routed underneath, must less route the new one properly, I still hooked it up, adjusted, and got home.

Guys, don't assume that your advice over the years, be it small or complex, didn't go unnoticed and was helpful.

Ted,
I'm curious as to what part of the cable failed??  Could you elaborate please??

I happened to break a traction control cable on my self propelled Toro lawnmower when i snagged it on a hose bib a couple of days ago. When I went to order a new cable, I happened to pull out the inner cable to measure it just to ensure that I was getting the right one. The inner cable broke in two pieces in the middle of the cable due to rusting of the cable. I lube most of my cables with Rust-Check  Coat and Protect which is an aerosol that congeals to a petroleum like jelly (Vaseline) and I thought it would do the job. Obviously not so I will now go back to using oil for cable lube. $60 CDN for a new cable @!#$@!#$

I got lucky 2X.  1 cable broke before a ride and another, after a ride.  Handle-end on one and at the clutch release end for the other.  Lottery tickets purchased immediately after each incident resulted in $0.00 !

Those events resulted in this.......which is no longer required and up for grabs as  I've converted to hydraulic.

If it fits my 79 or 81, I'd like it!

It broke right at the point where the cable itself connects to the ball/cylinder that sits in the lever.  It was likely the original.
