The chap who died just ran out of air.
I read that some of the submerged sections took 30mins to navigate, so I guess if he was exhausted / distracted and miscalculated his air reserves, then ran out too far from a dry section.

Just horribly unlucky timing I think?

In such case, really horribly unfortunate!...
I'm still perplexed with this though. I would imagine he wasn't all alone, but might had been impossible to use help from another diver because of a tight passage. Yet, he was distributing extra tanks... unless he already dropped them off and at the end it was just him and his tank.
I must say I once experienced running out of air. Not a good feeling! Luckily, it was just about 10 meters shallow, fantastic visibility, and my buddy diver was almost next to me. Just about everything opposite from what those cave divers experienced.
For learning purpose, I hope they will later explain in technical terms what the exact circumstances of this regrettable turn of events.

I think you're right Stan, he was on his way out, but as to the buddy-protocol in this particular environment, no idea.

They did say the worst channel was only 15 inches wide, so they of course had to dive with tanks unmounted and tow along.
