Was looking around at pulse fuel pumps. The one mentioned in the FAQ seems to have a cheaper version out there being advertised as a fitting replacement for that part# which was 1-AM109212.

I'm lookin at ebay item 300779905673. Just enter the item # into the search on ebay.com :).

Has anyone had any experiences with using the cheaper one or other kinds of pulse pumps? Thanks!

There's also a ton of dirt cheap vacuum pumps for scooters as well... My guess is one can be picked based off of how much it can flow but I dont have much reference on how much pressure that kind of pump can build I can only do the math in relation to maximum flow output. For example at 30ish mile per gallon I would expect to burn 2 gallons (or 3.78 liters) per hour at 60mph. I can see small pumps rated at 16 liters per hour but I can't be clear on the actual output because our motors might pulse at a different rate than the pump is designed for lol.

Mike,

That is not really a pump.
It needs a pipe from your inlet track to work & is not an electric pump.
If you just fitted this into your existing fuel delivery pipe, it would just stop the fuel passing.
I have fitted a lot of fuel pumps to CARB model 1300's so can help you with this.

Could I ask why you want a pump ?

My bike has had fuel delivery issues in the past, especially with crud clogging up the floats keeping them from shutting and leaking fuel everywhere. The motor also kept starving for fuel I had to keep pulling over and waiting for the carb bowls to refill before heading off again (even with a full tank this would happen). It already had an inline fuel strainer but that wasn't enough because I could see through the glass in the strainer that it was filling up with crud and rust chunks...

Starting out to deal with those issues was the fuel tank. I took it off and soaked it for like a month or two in a few gallons of evaporust. Once it was free of rust I switched the petcock over to a vacuum style one that still had it's top strainer attached to the inlet. My next step is adding a real good filter to the line as well. All the extra stuff I'm thinking will limit the flow going through the line and a vacuum pulse pump would prevent fuel starvation and also help prevent the gas from vaporizing.

I want it as bulletproof as possible and the pulse pump really looked like a good way to go. Once I have the correct one I'm going to route a vacuum line to it from one of the cylinders to provide the pulse and I'm planning on making a bypass around the pump with an inline shut-off valve so I can prime the carbs if I ever need to without excessive cranking.

OK.........the vacuum pump you are looking at will do nothing for your problem at all.

All that is REALLY is a vacuum valve that opens when it is fed via a pressure pipe from your inlet manifold when engine is running (exactly the same as a vacuum pet-cock)& closes when the pipe stops feeding (engine not running)
It does not & has no way of pumping fuel as it is not electric & does not pulse.

My advice is to make sure the fuel pipe you use has a MINIMUM of 7.5mm internal width (as standard) & that you route the pipe OVER the top of the carbs from the petcock & round & DOWN to the inlet T Piece from ABOVE rather than from below.
PLEASE SEE THIS IN THE FAQ SECTION UNDER "CARBS".......ITS REALLY GOOD.

Finally make sure your fuel filter is FAST FLOW type which is a must for non pumped systems as pump type restricts the flow & slows it down.

I have fitted electric fuel pumps in the past & they do help with supply, but if you use the correct pipe, filter & route from the fuel tank it will work just as well with less involved.

Thanks for your advice! I had actually gotten the idea from the FAQ and other parts of the site before the remodel lol. I already have the fuel lines routed the way as mentioned in there :). I'll skip over this for now and move on to other mods since it might not even be necessary. I'll look around for fast flowing fuel filters when I have some time and revisit if the bowls running dry issue comes back after I've got everything rebuilt.

One of the many excepts from the faq :):

"Here is where I put the vacuum pulse fuel pump. Then from the pump to the carbs.
This way the fuel can never continue to run with the engine off and you will always pump some when the engine is running. This pump does not produce any pressure only flow. So you cannot vapor lock as the pump will always flow some fuel. I took vacuum from only 1 cylinder to the pump. I mounted the pump over the air filter. Now to get the pump go to your local John Deere dealer and get this part number (1-AM109212). This is the John Deere part number. This is a high volume pulse fuel pump. It is made by Mikuni. This has a fuel in, fuel out and vacuum in."
