crank case was created by CWB
1982 KZ 1300-A4.
I am wondering what this red piece is. It looks like a very elaborate swivel attachment for the phillips screw holding a lever. it is located on the bottom of the crankcase near the oil filter casing.
I thought it might be a sensor of a sort.

That is the Sensor for low oil level indicator relay. The relay itself is located under the rear plastic cover. When the Sensor senses low oil level, it activates the relay which keeps the oil lamp on the dash lit until oil level is correct.
A useless pieces of kit which I have removed from both of my A4s. Oil level Windows is the only indication I trust!

Should there be a wire attached between this sensor and the relay?. I take your point about the oil level window being the only safe way to know your oil level.

I suspect Kawasaki added the Oil Level sensor as the early models were oil burners and it was possible to 'run them dry'. I actually did this on my 79 when I drove from Denver to Detroit/Windsor non-stop (except for fuel and piss stops) As I was coasting down the bridge into Canada Customs, My oil light came on. Had to add 4 liters to bring the oil back up to normal level. Can't see how keeping the sensor functional is a 'bad thing' - if I had a level sensor on my 79, the level would have never got that low. My ZN, has no Oil Pressure sensor, only the Oil Level sensor (that to me seems goofy).

Ha, thanks for the education. I thought is was a pressure sensor.... now I know it is a level sensor it is still useful, but my attention to oil level spy glass won't be diminished.
