Frank, The only things I would probably do to the engine if needed would be a header, maybe some head flow work, and degree the cams. I would try to lighten the bike as much as possible so with that in mind, would a KZ or Voyager be a better choice.? Not so important keeping the bike totally original. Like to put my own personal touches to it. Lowering the seat or even the bike a little would have to be a criteria since I'm short in stature.

I'd say KZ is a better start. 'Naked' from start. Except particular Voyager parts might be cheaper? The big question is about using or not using stock parts. If you are after a custom bike, you can get a very good Chinese headlight for 24 bucks, forks for 24, and a set of turn signals for 24? I know because I have them in a drawer, before I had a chance to get original at a super deal price. Put a different tank on and more savings. The list could go on and on. Last fully stock and new seat on eBay went for a cool USD 700. I got mine for 50, but that doesn't happen. Yes, that's dollars, not cents. I'd say get a stripped KZ 1979 - 1981, it would probably be more like 79 - 80, paint the frame and make a good engine. The rest, if you are going close to stock or custom, is just up to your imagination and - dollar power.

I am with StanG, a KZ would be a better start. And more valuable down the road.
The guy with the Montana bike emailed me back, his response:
"It is still available, but only until December 4."
