Well it can be any number of issues, the supplement in the service manual devotes about 10 pages to the 1981 ignition system, I would read through that section and begin testing the system step by step as indicated in the manual. Start with the basics, check fuses, wiring connections, and things like that first obviously.

You should confirm a faulty ignition module before shelling out the money for one.

Got it! Contact cleaner and CRC 226 did the trick. Ran it for a few seconds on carb cleaner through the fouled carbs. I guess those crazy looking carbs are next. scary...

Don't be too worried, those carbs are not too bad to work with. Scotch has a fantastic rebuild thread in the carburetor section that gives great step by step on refreshing those carbs.

You can find his post here.... www.kz1300.com/index.php/forum/carburato...79-carb-rebuild-pt-1

Now it's time to address the ignition coils and cam tensioner.

The fuel tank is next. Was coated some time ago evidently and is coming apart. I took some of the goop sealer out and tried to melt in in acetone to no avail. I need to clean this tank while preserving the original paint. I also need to take the sending unit off the bottom of the tank and would rather know what I am doing and not probe and break something. Any ideas on either?

It might help to know what color the tank sealer is so we can identify the sealer and then maybe someone can suggest what to eradicate the stuff out with. I seem to recall Scotch running into this problem with tank sealer. Cursed be the one who decided to put ethanol in our fuel to compensate for taking out the Tetra ethyl lead.

Corn is livestock fuel, has no business in motor fuel. This sealer is white and since it does not react with acetone I am surprised that the ethanol could attack it. I have cleaned and sealed tanks before with superior sealants, but have never tried to get an inferior sealant out.
