Just put a quart of oil in the crankcase and the oil light went out. The oil level didn't look that low on the sight glass. 100 miles from home on a 35 year old bike with an oil light on will make your heart skip.

I always fill mine up to nearer the top of the sight glass, a bit above the upper level line.

As soon as the oil light came on my bike shut off. I waited a minute and checked the oil level and it seemed ok but I guess this oil sensor likes the upper hash mark level. Anyway the light has been off ever since I added a quart. Strange.

The oil light is not a oil level light. It indicates no oil pressure and you should immediately shut the engine off and figure out the problem. No oil pressure and you'll wipe the crank and connecting rod bearings in less than a minute. The other area which requires constant oil pressure is the camshaft bearing surfaces which is the cylinder head itself. Never run with no oil pressure. A couple of seconds on start up, OK. never more than that.
