just to re-emphasise the numbering 'cross contamination'... mine is a A2 numbered frame but it has an A1 engine number.... and I'm pretty sure they have been together from the start!

I have the 80mph speedo, so that's A2?

Combined with the frame number, I would guess so (albeit a rather early one).

Mostly because, unless it was replaced due to damage, I'd be very surprised if anyone with an A1 willingly replaced the 120 mph speedo with the 80 mph version from a later model. Usually it goes the other way.

As strate6 stated, your frame and engine numbers are correct for an A2. Both frame and engine are about the 100th produced for a 1980 A2. I made a mistake in my earlier post on the engine serial number range for the A2. I transposed some parts of the B2 numbers with it. The post has been edited and should now be correct.
Yes, you have an A2. The 4.6 L marked clutch cover is correct for your engine. The 5.3 L marked clutch cover with the larger oil sight glass was implemented on the A2 starting with engine serial number 09427.
The real mystery with your KZ1300 is the luminous starlight blue paint (assuming factory paint color). If that is the original factory paint, the factory used A1 body parts. Otherwise, someone replaced the original parts, or repainted them. Factory A2 color was red.

Yeah, I question the "A2 color was red only". Maybe for the Z model, but my KZ A2 is the starlight blue as well, and a pretty late one too (frame ends in 8956). It's got the shallow oil sump too. I didn't think the deep sump came until quite a while later.

(shrugs) Who knows?

You must be right about the A2 red only color being for the Z1300 A2 (European version). The U.S.A KZ1300 A2's seem to be the same blue color as the KZ1300 A1's. I was absolutely wrong. Thanks for showing me the light.

Allow me to provide some information about the deep sump for the KZ1300's:
Engine serial numbers 000101 - 009426 = shallow sump and 4.6 L marked clutch cover.
Engine serial numbers 009427 - 010637 = shallow sump and 5.3 L marked clutch cover.
Engine serial numbers 010638 and higher = deep sump and 6.2 L marked clutch cover.
