whineing transmission
10 years 4 months ago
hey all
greetings from weather challenged England
riding my 1300 which I have not had long I am concerned the gearbox whines a little on the overrun in the lower gears. all works fine and all gears select etc, but if accelerating in 2nd gear for instance if you back the throttle off there is a certin whine. not sure if the transmission is naturaly noisy or not ??
I remember riding a valkiery once with the same but the guy who owned it said they were all like that
any info guys

They are straight cut gears and as such do make some noise on overrun and drive but you dont hear the drive noise as engine noise drowns it out. Main thing is if it seems to be getting worse then it needs looking at but I would not put anything significant to it.

Totally agree with what Rick says.
My A-4 transmission whines the same way. The other 3 I have had over the years also made the same gear whine.

I'll also agree with some inherent gear noise. My 1st 1300 was a '79 new out of the box and the 2nd gear whine was SO bad it went back to the dealer (permanently) after 4 months. The whine at any speed in 2nd gear was so loud it sounded like a siren. The new '80 I was given to replace the lemon '79 also had/(has) a whine in 2nd gear (only) but it is not enough to turn heads nor give any concern. The whine in fact is quite subtle and has never changed in pitch, tone or loudness.

I was wondering about mine; though I suspected it was probably par for the course. I had assumed it was the shaft bevel box.
