Drive shaft bolts

I'm trying to loosen the 4 bolts that hold the drive shaft to the motor but I can't get them to budge. Are they torqued on that tight or is there a trick to getting them to budge.... other than a longer wrench with more leverage? I could knock the bike over with the amount I'm pulling on them as it is.

The torque spec is 54 Ft-lbs and they should have non permanent locktite on them. Look for a blue residue around the head of the bolts. They should break loose with a wrench and a soft faced (plastic) hammer. If the residue is red that would be permanent Loctite. If so heat the heads of the bolts up with a propane torch to cook the red Loctite then try again.

On rotating elements like shaft pulleys and drive shafts, an impact wrench will instantly and safely remove the bolts.

Short bursts will use the inertia of the shaft to break the bolts free, and if they don't then the shaft will turn and you try again. Several short bursts with an air impact will do the job in an instant.

It's how we did it in the shop.

Right now the boot is just pulled back and I can get wrenches in. I do have an air gun but I'm guessing the swingarm and shaft have to come out to do that?

I was going to do exactly that. I took off the hub and took off the 4 bolts and plates on either side to remove the swingarm. How to get the pin/axle out looks like a mystery to me.

I don't see any loctite residue at all around the bolts.

you can't get the 4 drive shaft bolts out with an impact wrench because you just can't get an impact wrench on to them. You have to use ring or open ended spanners. There is a special tool to hold the universal joint but they are still a pain to get out.

The first time I put mine back in I didn't tighten them enough. The bolts worked loose after a short period and cut through the front of the swinging arm where it meets the boot - so be warned - as tight as you can get them with a non-permanent locking agent
