Yes. There is a plan . But it's been a bit on and off. But two things bought the idea back into focus recently . Several months ago there was a couple of threads created about this very idea from a couple of members and more recently , this rather worn ZN showed up on facebook really cheap not too far from me. So- the idea is to put the ZN engine in a KZ frame - Kind of " Tribute " bike ..... Replica ZG Bike - I guess we can call it something. And coupled with that , several years ago there were a couple of members , who have now past on, who had chattered about this idea in some detail. But as far as I can tell , I can only find one example of this being done , and it's on Facebook , but no details.
I've have an early 1979 frame and swing arm sitting on my Bike stand for nearly two years -powder coated black, new steering head bearings and swing arm bearings and forks installed -- then the whole project stalled --big house, big garden , grandkids and so on.
I bought two Liska gears which arrived a couple of days ago and I now have the engine out of the frame and on a dolly for ease of moving around .
.
But there is going to be a number of issues that need resolving as time goes on. I have the "79 engine that will have new rings and timing gear and no home for it . And the more abstract ideas as I think you had talked about a number of years ago using the mega-squirt to replace the massive old ecu, coming up with a more modern fuel rail / maybe an in the tank fuel pump, pressure regulator, fuel filter as per Hayabusa and more modern injectors programmed as sequential.
Then there's the electrical side . Buy a ZG harness from the German Shop, make my own with the Motogadget Blue at the heart of the system - ( as the Motogadget has worked well on my other bike ).
Then there's the camshafts - the exhaust in particular that has no worm drive for the KZ instruments .
And then the packaging of all this " new " stuff into an already painted frame. As far as I can tell , the battery box area on the ZG is really crammed for space but it does have extra brackets etc. to hold all the additional bits.
And 10 other things that I haven't thought of.
Anyway - many things to consider. The first part of the project is to install the gear , install new rings, clean everything up and paint the engine.

Nice !! Ambitious plan and fun things to work out. I hope it all comes together for you. Time to start a new thread and mark your progress. I look forward to following. You've got 2 alternators to work with and I'm jealous. The Megasquirt will need some power to run everything including the fuel injection.
I have the Microsquirt unit and will have to run the ignition in wasted spark and batch fire the fuel injection. Not a problem but given the choice, I would have gone with the Megasquirt so I could have run individual coil on plug and sequential fuel injection.
I'm almost done all of my renovations / commitments and hope to "get back in the game" and get on with my bike, I pulled out most of my boxes and started unpacking and thought I had lost the set of carbs I had refurbished and the set of throttle bodies with a set of 17 lb injectors I had purchased. Finally found them but then it brought up the idea that I hadn't come across the side covers. This is what happens when you start a project and have to box it up and move 5 TIMES !! Can't wait to see what I'll have to come up with @!#!@#$#!$.
Carry on. Looking forward to seeing your progress !!

Thanks for the support and ideas, I'm just gathering a few more small pieces and I'll get started. And to make a clear break from this thread I'll call it a Tribute. And not only because the final years of the ZG were, IMO at least , the best iteration not only of the 1979 to 1989 years of bikes but it stands alone as being so bold , different , and a huge reputational risk by Kawasaki - and I'm glad they did.
