Well it really depends on what is being sold that can and sometimes do justify an outrageous price on a piece of metal or plastic.
Better get used to it. Our bikes are only getting more rare and the NOS inventory is gradually going away.
From here on out, I only see prices going up over time.
That's not to say there aren't smarter ways to find an item for less money.
Lets use the Ebay engine cover as an example. I could send my old one in to Browns Plating and have it coming back brand new, for less than $200.00 In return I get a part that is plated far superior from the factory plating process.
On the flip side of this, I recently purchased a brand new fuel tank for my Z1R. The tank never had fuel in it with a new cap, emblems, and associated parts attached to the tank. I gladly paid $1,000.00 for it, after talking him down from $2,000.00. What did I do with this tank, I placed it back in the box and carefully covered it in bubble wrap for the day I can get $2,000.00 out of it.
One of the highest forms of enjoyment I get out of having two antique motorcycles is the chase in finding the needed parts, to restore them back to a factory condition. It took me 7 years to locate the factory exhaust system to my KZ1000. In prime condition these pipes are selling for over $1,500.00. Got mine for $400.00. What is the point in this story, by being patient and using multiple search techniques, one can find the part you want without always having to pay the astronomical price.......
I agree that most items on Ebay are overpriced. What people pay, and what the market will bear depends on how fast we need it. On the other hand, the supply chain is dwindling, on a motorcycle that was not produced in mass numbers.
Regards all.
Todd.
