Most likely the cam chain tensioner failed. I suggest that you read through the FAQ section on this site. There are many of us who have gone to manual tensioners or refitted tensioners fron ZX11's in order to avoid just this problem.
Good luck with your repair.

If your bike has already been upgraded with a new tensioner the problem was probably improper cam timing during a previous reassembly.

Got it wrong and bent the valves so it was corrected but not had the valves fixed. still wont start so sell the POJ I never liked it anyway.
I would like a dollar for every time I have seen that syndrome and fixed it.
The best one we used to get was when I worked for Suzuki and "the engine seized for no reason at all........ it has oil in the tank see" yes sir but it has no oil in the delivery lined so it will cost you this much and next time be a bit smarter.

Something's not making sense to me. If the cam chain had slipped or had been reassembled improperly the timing marks would not be right.
Check the diagrams on pages 67 through 69 of the service manual above (KZ1300-A1 ServiceManual.pdf) for the proper cam timing procedures.
Best of Luck!
