hey all
anyone know if clutch basket rattle is common on 13,s
bought mine just weeks ago and have a few engine problems to sort to make sure it all runs fine before i remove the motor for re poader coating etc.
the motor runs ok but backfires and is lumpy. its expected as its a barn find
i am doing the coils swap recomended, new plugs, clean carbs, and flush tank with fresh fuel which i hope will sort most of it.
also the air pipes to the head which i read can cause backfiring ?
can chain tentioner also but i guess i will have to have the head off to do the guide wheel.? bike has 30,000 miles.
is clutch bsket rattle common? i have a bit when clutch pulled in ?
by the way guys, great advise on here . much Appreciated

from what your saying i would get the carbs cleaned and balanced and get the engine running smoothly first. then see if the clutch still chatters, although it might be the primary chain that you can hear.
as for the air pipes i would block them off in the rocker cover, not used in UK models.

Totally agree with Ian:
A proper tune and smooth running engine first, then chase after any lingering noises. With all of the chains, springs, dampers, and gears in this engine, its a wonder it runs as quiet as it does, even with a proper tune.
Regarding noised pertaining to this clutch:
Notched clutch HUB fingers, consult manual for inspection limits
Broken or weak pressure plate springs
Mal adjusted clutch
Clutch HUB bearing
Worn, warped, or scorched rotors and stators
Improper oil viscosity
Clutch rattle is not normal, I would not be concerned about small rattles.
With the items you mention in your post, you're on the right path to resurrect this barn find.
Good Luck and keep us posted.
Regards.
Todd.

great thanks
what's the best way to block the air valves off.
so I can remove the pipes from air box to valve and to head and bin the lot. what's the best way to block the spigots on the reed valve units.

Hi
on my engine there are shaped plates that sit in the rocker cover blocking off the holes.
you could look for some of those, or tap a thread into the hole and insert some small bolts.
or what im doing next and that is cut off the whole affair on the rocker cover and get the holes welded up then polish the lot.

Why Have Four When You Can Have Six ?

Or you could just find a UK or Australian spec rocker cover, which does not have the reed valves fitted at all.
