Lovely mess inside this bowl Gummed one next to a clean one, gumming goes into carb bodies jetting, floats scavenge pipe everywhere lol. So question is what's the best way to clean and remove, to date have put through Ultra Sonic, further boiled them for an hour, introduced vinegar into the boil. Have managed to wreck a good saucepan and clear some of the tar but only in the float bowls, anticipate carb bodies being a lot harder

I think if Scotch chimed in here he would say "lacquer thinner". I had not been an advocate of lacquer thinner until Scotch got me on to it and it's now my "new cleaning product" of choice.

That stuff isn't soft has hardened lol maybe boil to soften then Lacquer thinner might even steam first, be a shame to waste a potentially good set of carb bodies. These must have been sitting for years to get like this

YUP, KB's right! "Lacquer-Thinner"! It will dissolve and strip the most difficult varnish build-up.
What it doesn't remove will remain in place as solid particulate (mostly rust) which will require a more "manual" approach. If after a soaking in L.T. you can not pass light, air or fluid through it - It's usually rust! Typical places to look for rust 'clogs" are in the bowl in the port that feeds the choke supply and above the float needle-valve body (in the carb-body fuel gallery). You can refer to the "'79 carb rebuild" article for more detailed help and suggestions.

If you find jets and needles (or other parts) difficult to remove despite the assistance from the tutorial, PLEASE ask for some additional help BEFORE you ruin a set of carbs with drills, "EZ-outs" and punches!

Hi Scotch, thanks for the reply, LOL I have no intention of ruining a good set of carbs. Have cleaned one of the bodies up now, carb cleaner is passing through all the fuel ways nicely. Have taken a bit of a test approach to the gumming, firstly to remove all the fixed components. And following the advice on Lacquer Thinners thought what else can do this so carried out in initial clean of exposed areas with nail varnish remover and a cloth proved to be excellent and just wiped it all away, jets etc are soaking in it this minute. This was followed by a good dip in an Ultrasonic Cleaner for an hour. the worst gumming has taken place in the bowls as would be expected. By the way congratulations on the excellent article you have done for the site. Will be buying shortly some Lacquer thinner lol
