Just Removed the starter clutch due to unwanted noises lol all 3 bolts fell out 2 of them sheared, have along with others had these bolts work loose in the past. Have re-torqued and lock-tighted but experience tells me they are prone to working loose again, how have others resolved the problem apart from tack welding. Other concern is the shearing, will be using stainless I think, fortunate thing I suppose is that the starter clutch is easy to get to

Loctite should take care of the problem. One critical step a lot of people miss is to clean off the bolt and female threads with a residual free solvent to guarantee the adhesion between the Loctite and the threaded parts.

Yea Kawboy I agree it should, any idea why the bolts would shear apart from if worked loose the extra strain from whip lash

I wouldnt use stainless bolts as they are too soft
you need a high tensile bolt Grade 12.9 and as Kawboy says, wash everything with a good solvent.

after a bit of thought an 8.8 bolt should be good enough as it can be torqued to the required force, a 12.9 bolt has to be torqued to its max which would probably rip the threads out of the starter.

check the threads in the holes if they have come loose then its possible that the threads are damaged
making the bolts loose before you start

probably only an 8.8 bolt BZP coated, black bolts are harder because they havent been through any other process.

check the old bolts with a file or spark test them.
