I forgot to ask. What is the story with the 4.5L oil pan? Bad idea to leave it on?

Thanks

Hi Detlef
welcome from NZ
as Holger im also curiouse as to where you are from
could you please enlighten us, we are quiet a mixed bunch from many parts of the globe, im sure you will fit right in.
i agree with Kawboy regarding the Liska gear drive, anything that makes a noise that progressively quietens off in a engine, simply is not great!
the only way for 2 items to get quieter is if 1 or both are wearing, one could question that once they have mated to each other the ongoing wear would be minimal.
the original obviously wears out as im sure the new one will, the difference is you will get the main wear on the drive being plastic, if you use the steel one as its obviously harder i would guess both chain and gear will wear making both a must replacement.
six and one half of a dozen!
regards Dion

Franconia,
regarding the early smaller capacity oil pan, as I understand it, there is no disadvantage in having it, provided you keep the oil topped up to the correct level. It seems that some of these bikes consume engine oil, and of course there is less of a reserve in the small sump, so engine damage could result if the level fell too low. But if you maintain the level, you should be OK. The bigger sump would give more peace of mind.

As for other upgrades:
The cam chain tensioner can fail, with catastrophic results. There are several courses of action you can take to avoid that.
The ignition coils can develop cracks. The FAQ section suggests alternatives.
You can search the forum for the above two subjects, and get lots of information.
I'm sure other members will pass on their wisdom too.

Hi Detlef

maybe check out Wikipedia (German version), that should give you a clue about the different models of the Z1300 (includes engines and frame-numbers).

One additional comment: The amount of oil you use does have an impact on the overall oil-temperature. One of my buddy tested the difference between the upper and the lower oil level (6.3 l) and found a difference of 10°C of the oil.

best regards

Holger
