Hey guys it's me again with yet another question,
I am about to remove the drive shaft so I can remove the engine from the frame, has anyone got any tips on the best way to do this. I remember seeing an article on the old KZ1300 site which covered this but I don't seem to be able to find it anymore. I have undone the gaiter clamps around the drive shaft/engine coupling, the gaiter is split so I think I will just cut this off to make it easier to get at the bolts and replace it when I put it back together. Are there any traps that one should be aware of when taking this apart. Also are there any traps with respect to removing the swing arm assembly. Again I have read up on it in the manual, but I would rather look silly now asking lots of questions rather than make a mistake and get it wrong, there is nothing quite like practical experience to point you in the right direction. I did an engine removal a little while ago, all a new experience to me, I have a manual and don't have any of the "special" tools so I make do. I just put a large screwdriver thru the gaps in the uni joint to hold the shaft while I undid the bolts holding the shaft to the rear of the engine, then undid the 3 bolts holding the swing arm bearing cap on both sides and popped them out far enough so the whole swing arm drops off. hardest thing I had to do was put that rubber boot back on after and get those clamps tight to hold it, a lot of swearing and cursing but I did get it done, cheers.




biggest tip I can give you ..... TAKE heaps of photos, that way you can look at them and see what goes where, saved me a few times :-)

Thank you kza13, I have worked on heaps of bikes in the past but never on one of these masterpieces. It certainly is a steep learning curve. I will also be taking heaps of photos

Do yall happen to know where to get a replacement drive shaft boot or if it's not available maybe just the outside diameter of where it clamps so I can get some silicone intercooler piping to replace mine with.

The gaiters are hard to find these days as no longer made by K.

I once found a drive shaft / UJ boot off a certain car that I cut & modified to fit & it worked well........problem is I cannot remember the car model !!

If you have a "friendly" local car parts supplier you could take the old gaiter to them to see if they can match it up with one they carry in stock, which is what I did.

If you do find one, please share the parts / model reference with us !!

Well you are right- the hardest part is getting the rubber boot off without wrecking it.
But, being the lucky people we are in that we own one of these bikes , the Germans have stood up and made a replica - for about 70 Euro.
