Bill,

Apologies Bill, didnt realise that.

I am not too familiar with the Z/KZ1300 A4 & A5 ignition systems (never owned one) but know the A1 A2 & A3 very well.
The markings on the rotor & pick up plate for valve clearances are different from model to model as the ignition systems are.

No problem Pete. I was wondering why Torque doesn't have the "1" & "2" marks on his rotor myself.

If you are just checking valve clearances, then as long as the piston on the particular cylinder you are checking is well down from TDC & the cam lobes are facing away from the shim itself, then you are safe to measure the tollerances on THAT cylinder & use the shim tool to release the shim to swap it if needs be.

Obviously using the timing marks for this job normally allows you to measure more than one cylinders valve clearances at a time, but this is an alternative if you dont know or understand the timing marks on the rotor.

Hope that makes sense ?

TORQUE:

You will know when you are on the right "T" mark on the rotor, when your Camshaft timing marks are aligned with the head to valve cover (parting line) gasket mating surface. If they do not align, then the engine is out of time.

As you start from this point, you merely rotate the Rotor bolt 120Deg at a time, first @ the proper "T" mark then "1", then "2" and it repeats back to "T" / "1" / Then finally with "2" for the remaining valves.

The factory Kaw manual states to rotate the rotor bolt clockwise

Make sure you use the A-4 (1982) supplement. Ditto on what Strate6 says on the differences on the ignition systems. Use the proper supplement and you can't go wrong.

Coincidentally, I live in Springfield too.

Please take this question in the right & proper manner........

When you say you live in SPRINGFIELD...........is the one.........well........where Homer Simpson lives ?

Asked by a true Englishman (ignorance to these things !).
