I'm surprised it wasn't said sooner that both forks are linked.

Here a couple of old photos of it on my bike.

Currently one available on Ebay.

My '80 came with only an air-valve on each shock. Anyone know what year first saw the OEM style, as in the pictures?

Can you not use a pre-load spacer (or longer pre-load spacer) in the fork tube or will the springs bind? I run spacers in a couple of air assist Honda forks (no added air) and they're an improvement over just air (less stiction so more responsive suspension, and presumably improved seal life).

tha nks all
it seem all years have differing set ups.
mine is a 1984 a5. it has only one valve on the left fork top.
there is a balance pipe at the bottom of the headlight bracket so air pumped into the valve stabilises through both legs.
in all pictures it shows this pipe as a standard rubber one as in brake pipe.
mine is a much thinner solid pipe!!!
as long as it works though eh.
thanks for all comments. really enjoying finding this stuff out.
