I am looking for some input regarding an issue I have with the Bike I am about to restore, as I would like to sort out any issues with registration before I get the frame powder coated and rebuild the bike. The issue is I have bought a project bike from a friend which has been off the road since 1996 . The Bike is a Q plate he changed the engine about 20 years ago but it still shows the original engine number on the V5, also the V5 is the old type it has not been changed since he got the bike and registered it in 1990, so one of the roads I was looking at was get a dating certificate and try to apply for a age related plate using the frame number and either the original engine number or the engine that I have which I think may be a couple of years newer, by just playing ignorant to the Q plate and make out I bought the bike without a Reg number. The other way I could go is I received another rolling chassis which was imported from Canada, I got the original Canadian certificate of registration and I also got a form fro HM customs saying the the bike has been imported to the UK and is stamped, it is dated 2000 so pre NOVA, there is a problem though the Canadian doc only shows the Frame number and the import paper work only shows the Engine number ( I dont have the engine) is there any way of cross referencing the Frame and engine to prove that the paperwork for importing has been done. The third option is for me to buy a second hand frame which has a UK reg are these easy to get, I am reluctant to have to go this way as I have 2 perfectly good frames, I know there are a thousand different stories about importing and registering so input from anyone who has had success with any similar situations would be helpful.

Hi ogri,

I would contact the VJMC as they are we’ll rehearsed on registering bikes with DVLA. Don’t contact Ray as he only deals with Honda’s. i

Thanks I am a member of the vjmc I am offshore just now when I get home I will contact HMRC as the import paperwork for the rolling chassis I have only has the engine number ,which was probably sold separately and the Canadian reg document only shows the frame number , so I will need to speak to them when I get home. I will use the VJMC to help me I'm not sure what year my engine is I will need to check the number when I get back I'm sure I will be able to get an age related plate for whatever is the newest the frame or engine thanks again for the help.

I wonder if anyone could help me decipher my frame number it is JKAKZAA17CA014207, the closest number I can see on any list is 1981 A3 which has the number JKAKZAA15BA-011501, I know the last C makes mine a 1982 as the 10th digit is the year Im wondering about the 17 instead of the 15 the bike came with panniers and Im wondering if thats the frame number for the touring model is there such a model as the B4 perhaps.
