When they were first released in 1977 I was 9 years old & to me they looked like something from outer space. I had a poster of one on my bedroom wall for quite a while. They were so far ahead of their time for me with their moulded bumpers (when my father's company car at the time, a Mk.2 Ford Escort, had chrome bumpers lol), now they are the norm. The same goes for the dashboard, the front that looked like a shark & especially the rear end treatment, the way it had the rear lights at an angle. Also the way the headlights popped up. They're a very underrated car & as such, for quite a while were an utter bargain, I promised myself one one day (a later face lifted one from 87 onward) but I missed the boat as they've started to appreciate quite markedly in the past 5 years.

I work ( 27 years) for the official Porsche dealership in Leeds, England. When I started there, the 928 was, of course, still in production. A very rare sight, though, even back then, and more so now. My favorite versions of the 928 were the 928 Sport, 928 GT, and 928 GTS, in each case with manual five speed transmission, and dog-leg first gear position - not that you often needed first. I well remember being astounded by the car's ability to move off in third gear, and, if memory serves me correctly, go all the way up to 100mph before changing up to fourth. I also recall that the manual gearbox cars had oddly spaced pedals, and unfamiliarity could result in heart stopping moments as your right foot went for the brake, only to find a huge gap where you expected it to be! The gearbox even made a nice whine in the lower ratios, which added to the pleasure! The automatic transmission, to my mind, blunted the car's feel significantly.
A fabulous car, the shape of which still looks good today, I think .
I have attached a couple of photos. The 928 S4 is one on which our workshop recently carried out a bare shell restoration. Re-painted in original Cassis metallic. Stunning to behold!
The white 928 is one that is used in the Historic Sports Car Club racing series over here.

My girl is a 1985 32V DOHC 5 liter with the 5 speed manual. When I bought it I didn't know thst only 10% of the models were produced in manuals. She goes 60 mph in first gear. I confirmed that one day. The exhaust note reminds me of a 30ft Sea Ray I had with 2 350 Chevy's in it. When that boat idles, it had a rumble to it that made my day. Thr Porsche has the same rumble.
