Hello all,
I am in the process of restoring my '82 A4 Z1300. I have a manual which I have read with respect to dismantling the carbies to
clean and reassemble. I am not exactly an Einstein and I do know my way reasonably well around cars and bikes but I found that the manual is quite confusing. Has anyone got any tips or straight forward instructions about dismantling these carbs that would assist me. Thank you all in advance.

Hi TJ,

I have a set of practice carbs that I've lent out before. I suppose that won't work in your case. I've been into mine plenty. I'll try to write up a how to on the subject. In the meantime, if you have any specific questions, ask away.

Hi KZQ thank you for your quick response.

I think my main issue is all the associated attachments on the top side of the carb. The manual says to remove all the choke linkage shaft and link rods. Is this as big a job as the manual makes out or is it fairly straight forward. I will be taking heaps of photos so hopefully will not lose my way to much.

I've always taken the carbs off complete with the choke mechanism. Remind me again but yours is a KZ isn't it?

I start by removing the tank and side covers.

I've already disassembled all the air injection stuff so I go right to the top of the airbox.

I pull two portions of the wiring harness to the right till they clear the frame tube. One or both are secured by a retainer clip that screws on from the right side. Once the harness is out of the way and the screws are removed that join the two sections of the airbox the top portion can be moved rearward till the boots come off of the carbs. When manipulating the top portion of the air box be careful not to damage the seal that lays between the two sections. The top section comes out to the right.

Now loosen the clamps on the carb connectors. Disconnect the throttle cables and fuel line. Pull the carbs rearward and tilt them down, they also come out to the right.

I probably forgot a detail or two but, honestly I can get the carbs off in no more than 15 minutes and that's while sippin coffee.

Hey Bill,
Sorry, I think we must be talking at cross purposes. I have the carbs off the bike, but am wanting to strip them to clean them up as the bike has been sitting for quite some time and the bodies have oxidised a little and are covered in the normal grime that carbies get after alot of use. Also with it sitting obviously the internals will need cleaning out to. Which reminds me, what is a good method or carb cleaning solvent to use. I was going to send them to a specialist to be cleaned but that is quite expensive so thought I would give it a go. Oh and Yes my bike is a 1982 KZ1300 A4.
